Why you keep forgetting stuff before coffee

Posted 15/4/2026

Your brain is basically a browser with 47 tabs open, and somehow the one tab you actually need keeps crashing.

That thing where you walk into a room with the energy of someone who just made a very important decision, only to stand there blinking like a confused golden retriever? Science has a name for it. It's called an "event boundary". Your brain files away information when you move through doorways, like it's aggressively tidying up a desk nobody asked it to clean.

Basically, your brain is out here doing admin work at the worst possible time.

And look, we could get deep into the neuroscience of it all, but the more interesting question is why it almost never happens after a proper cup of coffee. That first real sip hits and suddenly everything sharpens up. The mental fog lifts, the internal search engine boots up, and you're no longer standing in the kitchen holding a spatula wondering what life choices led you here.

Coffee doesn't just wake you up. It actually helps your brain connect the dots faster, sort through the noise, and remember why you walked into that room in the first place. It turns out the doorway problem has a pretty delicious solution.

The right cup makes your brain feel less like a buffering video and more like a loading screen that actually finishes.

Monogram Coffee (https://monogramcoffee.com/ )

Calgary, AB

In their own words: “Our story started well before we served Monogram’s first coffee. We (Ben, Justin and Jeremy) met working together as three overly-excited baristas eagerly starting out on our coffee journey. What made those times so special was that everything was about discovery, exploration and learning about coffee. It seemed like everyday brought new tastes, new techniques, and new friends. Despite coming from three different backgrounds (music, health sciences and development), we came together because of our shared love of exploring the world of coffee.

However, we quickly realized that specialty coffee at the time exuded an air of elitism and exclusiveness that we didn’t feel comfortable with. We knew firsthand that exploring the amazing world of specialty coffee was better shared, and not part of some exclusive club. So we started Monogram to create a place where we could passionately pursue some of the world’s best coffee, and use it to bring people together. Ever since, we’ve made it our mission to make it easy for all people to discover amazing coffee.”

If you love coffee, a good laugh, and knowing more than everyone else at brunch, you're going to fit right in.

Until the next cup
